Nanjing

Nanjing is a city of around 8.2 million people that is the capital of the Jiangsu region in the East of China. It is a 2nd Tier city that has a lively expat community. It has seen rapid development in the last ten years which is shown by a great, cheap and efficient public transport. Nanjing is famous for education, culture and as being a "green" city. The city has two main universities, many historic sites, memorials and museums that attract thousands of visitors each year. Nanjing is host the Confucius Temple, Nanjing Museum of China and also the first modern observatory building in China, the Zijinshan Observatory
Cost of Living
The cost of living is  obvious very dependent  on how you wish to live. If you want all of your home comforts that could mean spending a lot of money on imported things. In China pretty  much anything imported is expensive.

Food
Food in Nanjing ranges from cheap noodles (15rmb-30) to mid range restaurant where food for two can cost  from (60-130) to more expensive  restaurants  that can charge upwards of 150 rmb. Generally  foreign foods  are more expensive,  a pizza for around 100 rmb, although bargains can be found!

Drinking and Nightlife
Accommodation
For a small flat downtown Nanjing towards  the  lower  end of the market costs around 3,000 rmb. The further  out you go  the cheaper it gets, a 2 bedroom flat  further out can cost around 2,000rmb.
Transport
A  trip on the subway  is very cheap, a few stops for 2 rmb and the most expensive  tickets cost 5rmb. The reason why the subway is so  cheap  is because the government subsidies  the cost. Busses are also cheap with journeys costing from 2 to 5 rmb. Taxis are more  expensive costing around 3rmb a km.

History
Nanjing was previously known as Nanking the old capital of China and one of the four ancient capitals of China. It is currently the capital of Jiangsu. It is infamously known as the place where the Japanese committed many wartime atrocities and was the capital of China at the time.
Nightlife
Ask any local where to go at night and they'll probably tell you "Yāo Jiǔ Yāo èr" (1912). Nanjing's answer to gentrified food-and-bar districts like Shanghai's Xintiandi, much of the area consists of interchangeable Chinese dance clubs with loud dance music and crowded tables crammed in among narrow walkways and tiny dance floors. Whilst not as international as cities such as Shanghai, it is still home to a lively expat scene.
Events
As for things to do, if you look at our events page you will see every month we arrange for other expats and friends to take part in activities. This can be things in Nanjing, such as the purple mountain, camping, BBQ's to trips to the surrounding areas such as Anhui to see the yellow mountain and Fushan mountains. Potentially we will also arrange trips to some of the more famous Chinese landmarks such as the Great Wall of China and the Terraccotta Army
