How To Become An IB Educator
In China the rapidly growing education market has thrown up a number of IB candidate schools. These schools are often new or existing schools wishing to add an IB program as part of their school. Schools try to get the accreditation in two years. The IB organisation does not have educational requirements for the teachers of these schools and leaves it up to the school, or school's district recruitment policy. Due to a shortage of foreign teachers a lot of candidate schools do not insist upon QTS (Qualified Teachers Status.) These schools will often hire teachers with a TEFL and a few years experience.
The IB provide different forms of personal development, short workshops and MAs in education:
The workshops can be completed via
-
Face to Face workshops
-
In house workshops
-
On-line personal development.
Face To Face Workshops
The IB have many face to face events, that run throughout the year, in many different locations. Every event will include different workshops. These workshops can be signed up to individually, one workshop contains 15 hours of professional development, split across two and half days. One of the main advantages of travelling to these workshops is the ability to network with other teachers and educators. It is also very beneficial to see how staff at different schools implement the IB methodology.
In House Workshops
Especially with new or candidate IB schools who need to train a lot of teachers it is often more economical for them to run and in-school workshop. These are essentially the same as the workshops except that your school will book someone from the IB to come in and provide the training on the school's premises.
Online Personal Development
It is also possible to register for online workshops through the IB website. The topics will be similar to the face to face workshops, but provide the flexibility and convenience for teachers unable to travel to events. These are also available any time so are easier to fit into your schedule. However one of the big drawbacks of this would be missing out on the networking opportunities provided by travelling to the workshops.
MA in Education
IB World Schools generally prefer to hire staff who already have experience. Due to the shortage of such staff, (especially relevant in China) the IB offers educational certificates through various universities and institutions. For more information about the universities and institutions working with the IB please click here. The two certificates are an IB certificate in teaching and learning and the advanced certificate in teaching and learning research. These IB education certificates complement your academic qualifications. For example the Education University of Hong Kong offers an MA in Executive Masters of Arts in International Leadership and Change (IELC.) By completing this course you will receive the MA from the university and a certificate from the IB.
